Why Forged Components Matter

Forging involves shaping solid metal through compression techniques like hammering or pressing—without melting the material. The result? Parts that are:

  • Stronger and more reliable
  • Uniform and defect-free
  • Wear-resistant and impact-tough

These advantages make forging ideal for critical components, including:

STEEL FORGING TECHNIQUES

Closed & Open Die Forging

Closed-Die Forging (Impression Die Forging)

In closed-die forging, the heated material is placed between two dies that contain a pre-cut cavity (or impression) in the shape of the desired part. When compressed, the material flows to fill the cavity and take its final form.

Best For:

  • Small to medium-sized parts

  • High-volume production

  • Tight tolerances and complex shapes

  • Aerospace, automotive, military, and medical components

Advantages:

  • High precision and repeatability

  • Superior surface finish

  • Minimal post-processing required

Open-Die Forging

In open-die forging, the heated metal is placed between flat (or slightly contoured) dies and compressed without full confinement. This method allows the operator to manipulate the material shape progressively with multiple strikes or movements.

Best For:

  • Large parts and custom shapes

  • Low-quantity or one-off production

  • Shafts, rings, cylinders, bars, and blocks

  • Heavy equipment, power generation, marine, and mining applications

Advantages:

  • Greater flexibility for large-scale or irregular components

  • Improved grain structure and strength

  • Lower tooling costs compared to closed-die forging

  • Ideal for oversized parts with high structural integrity
